We'll be making web pages using Notepad. Notepad makes simple, ASCII text files. This works because HTML is simple, ASCII text.

In more advanced HTML classes, we use tools, such as Dreamweaver, to speed up the process of web site creation, but in this class, we work directly with the HTML document, typing the codes in ourselves.

Besides, this is the macho way to do it, and gives you bragging rights later.

In this way, we also hope to de-mystify the process, and to give you an understanding of the way HTML works so that later, when you use a WYSIWYG (What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get) tool, you will better understand how it works.

The first order of business will be to make sure everyone has an Internet-based web site account so that you can post your work. Go to http://geocities.yahoo.com to set up a free web hosting account if you do not already have one. Here are some instructions on setting up a geocities web page.

Likewise, everyone must have an Internet-based e-mail account which they will check regularly during the weeks that the class meets. Go to http://mail.yahoo.com to set up a free Internet e-mail account if you do not already have one.

If you have not yet filled it out, please click here for a copy of the first day HTML Assessment . You can e-mail it to me at marthaedwards@swbell.net. If today is the first day of class, please print it out and hand it to me.

We will begin with the Quick Tutorial. In each class, we will work through the Tutorial section in your textbook. If we do not finish it, it becomes homework.
