Reduce - Make Your Images Smaller

It may be a shame to reduce a beautiful image like this:
Old Ironsides off Marblehead Old Ironsides off Marblehead

to a small image like this, but it is often necessary to sacrifice the detail and loveliness of the large image to reduce download time.

The large image to the left is 35 Kilobytes large, and would take half a minute to download over a 14.4Kbps modem, or 7 seconds over a 56Kbps modem.

The small one is about 10K, and would take about 8 seconds on the slow modem and about 2 seconds on the 56 Kbps. You get the idea.

To reduce download time, reduce the number and size of the images on your page. On the Internet, a picture can easily cost way more than a thousand words. Make sure it is worth it!

This may seem too obvious to mention, but people sometimes take images directly off their digital cameras and use them. They could easily be 1,000 to 4,000Kb large. Over a slow modem connection, it could take over one hour to load!
