TEXT:

Don't Make Me Think - Steven Krug

The Design of Everyday Things - Donald Norman

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Students will learn how to design usable web sites, when and how to apply emerging web standards, to enhance usability, and how to conduct cost-effective user tests to identify usability problems.

Special attention is given to designing multi-tiered navigation schemes, to the practical, aesthetic and political issues involved with home page design and to ADA accessibility issues.

The class will consist of lectures, class critiques of existing web sites, and hands-on design projects.

Assignment Schedule: In general, you should plan to spend at least as much time outside of class as you do in class, or about 3-5 hours per week.

The College provides a computer lab in Room BA201 for you to use to support your academic work. If you do not have equipment at home which allows you to complete the work, plan to come in to the lab. A schedule of computer lab hours is posted below.

Each student should have an Internet e-mail account which is checked regularly. If you do not already e-mail, I will be happy to help you set up a free Internet e-mail account.

ATTENDANCE:

"Half of Life is just showing up."            --Woody Allen

Prompt attendance is expected of all students. Don't be late, don't be absent. If absence or lateness is unavoidable, let me know in advance, or if there is a dire emergency, as soon as you can. Likewise, do not leave the class until you have completed your homework or class is over, whichever is earlier.

Getting a good grade in my class is easy. Show up, do the work. Getting a bad grade is just as easy, only in reverse.

CAMPUS COMPUTER LABS

The College provides campus computing facilities for you to use to support your academic work. If you do not have equipment at home which allows you to complete the work, plan to come in to the lab as needed.

TESTING POLICY:

There will be no tests in this class, only assignments.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY:

To receive a non-punitive grade of "W" for the course, you must complete the withdrawal process. If you think you may need to withdraw, be sure to check with the Registrar's office for the procedures to follow.

ACCESS OFFICE:

The College has an Access Program office that guides, counsels and assists students with disabilities. It is located in Room 244 of Clark Hall (314-984-7673). If you have special needs, you should register with the Access Program so that you may receive their services. After you have registered with the Access Program, please contact me as soon as possible to discuss your needs. If you feel that I could help you better if I had a more complete understanding of your situation, let us schedule a discussion outside of class. A good way to contact me is via e-mail at marthaedwards@swbell.net

PLAGIARISM

"The act hardens into habit, the habit hardens into character, and character is destiny."

Plagiarism and cheating are wrong. Don't do it.

Don't copy someone else's work and present it as your own. You lose whether we know or not, and when we find out, you may get an "F" and/or be dismissed from the class.

ASSESSMENT:

St. Louis Community College is committed to the continuous improvement of student academic achievement. To that end, we will ask you to give us feedback on what is working for you, and what is not.

CONDUCT:

It is expected that you will contribute to the increase of knowledge and wisdom in your classes, either by joining in to a conversation, or by remaining silent and listening when others have the floor. Speaking well and listening well are two arts that will increase your learning and earning capacity.

DISCLAIMER:

Changes in the evaluation procedure may be made at my discretion.
